Mondo 2000 History Project

Welcome to the MONDO 2000 History Project archives.

MONDO 2000 was the legendary “cyberculture” magazine that became a popular tech/counterculture flagship during the 1990s. The two main personages associated with MONDO 2000 were Ken Goffman aka R.U. Sirius and Alison Kennedy aka Queen Mu, although thousands — including several who were indispensible — participated in both the magazine and the cultural scene that surrounded it.

Operating out of the San Francisco Bay Area, MONDO 2000’s publishing history began in 1984 as the “neopsychedelic magazine” High Frontiers before transitioning into the more techno oriented Reality Hackers and eventually achieving a sort of popular success as MONDO 2000. Neil Gaiman once said, “MONDO 2000 was the coolest thing in the world for about six months.” We think it was that for much longer, but then we’re prejudiced.

The MONDO 2000 History Project began on July 4, 2010 with a successful Kickstarter campaign.

A book — Use Your Hallucinations: MONDO 2000 in the Late 20th Century Cyberculture — will see publication some time in 2013. It is an R.U. Sirius memoir mashed up with as-told-to quotes from participants and fragments of content and memorabilia from the “MONDO” years.

This web-based archive will include content from all three magazines. It will also include various bits of memorabilia including audio and video content, ad brochures, party flyers, press write-ups, and edited interviews with all those who submitted to interviews for the book. Upon the publication of Use Your Hallucinations, The MONDO 2000 History Project website [ http://www.mondo2000history.com/ ] will become available as a location for MONDO 2000 enthusiasts — both new and old — to share ideas and stories.

Who knows. Maybe there will be a MONDO 3000!
